miniTwig Land of Wonder

Run of the mill mommy-blogging with washable nappies, extended and tandem breastfeeding, baby-led weaning… basically it’s all about the kids.

Lex sat in the high chair with food all over his face and a piece of cheese in his hand.

Although baby-led weaning seems to be a hot-topic amongst some groups of parents, I must admit the biggest plus for me is that it enables me to be lazy. Not for us the relentless pureeing of vegetables nor the mushing of foods. Instead, as we did tonight, we can eat our dinner in a calm unhurried way whilst Lex picks at the same food on his high-chair tray.

We deviate slightly in that I will offer him a few spoonfuls first and he’ll occasionally have a little pot of baby mush fed to him. However, on the whole he dictates what he wants to eat, has fun squishing his food about and practises his hand-eye coordination. He doesn’t eat a lot but that’s fine, he’ll try almost anything and doesn’t bat an eyelid at lumps and funny textures.

    Hi there,

Great to hear you are following baby-led weaning. I believe passionately that is is the best way to go about introducing babies to solids. Thought you might be interested to know that there is a new DVD about BLW. It’s available from Mark-It TV (markittelevision.com), £25 GBP plus P&P.

I would really like to try BLW, but I cannot find enough information on how it’s done! I’m afraid I can’t afford the DVD as much as I’d like to and can find nothing else. As far as I can understand you just keep giving the baby a selection of food and let her play with it and try bits. I have been doing this for a couple of weeks now and it’s fun! She enjoys playing with food and licks alot but if she does get some in her mouth she gags and spits it out! She is 6months old now and I feel she needs more than my milk but doesn’t seem ready to feed herself yet. Do you have any advice? She is a fantastic wee thing and was sleeping right through/up for one feed from an early age but over the past month is up 2-3 times a night seemingly starving! I am very tired, finding it hard to get enough rest to produce highest quality milk etc.. Should I persist or try some puree along with finger food? Sorry to Write so much! I have no one to ask who has tried it but I have lots of people who think I should not!
    Thanks for your time.
